School Leavers FAQ
Knoxbrooke’ s School Leavers Program helps young people transition from school into the next stage of their life, whether that’s employment, further study, volunteering, or greater independence. Through personalised learning, practical experiences, skill development, and community participation, participants build confidence, make new connections, and develop the skills needed for adult life. The program is designed to help young people explore their strengths, discover their preferred pathway, and prepare for a successful future.
The School Leavers Program helps participants build the practical capabilities needed to navigate work, community life and adulthood with increasing independence. This can include self-advocacy, decision-making, initiative, workplace behaviours, planning and organisation, social communication, emotional regulation, problem-solving, travel and community navigation, digital skills, money management, safety awareness, and learning how to respond to feedback and changing expectations.
Participants are supported to better understand their strengths, interests and support needs while developing the confidence, judgement and experience required to pursue employment, further education, volunteering, meaningful community roles and greater independence in adult life.
Yes. As part of the application process, we arrange a Support Discussion Meeting at the service location. This gives you the opportunity to learn more about the program, discuss your goals and support needs, ask questions, and take a tour of the service before deciding whether it’s the right fit for you.
Trial days can also be arranged, with appropriate support provided by the applicant, to help you experience the program and determine whether it is a good fit for your needs and goals.
The School Leavers Program helps participants develop practical life and employment skills that support their future goals. These may include communication, teamwork, leadership, problem solving, independence, responsibility, confidence, time management, and community participation. The skills gained through the program are designed to prepare participants for employment, further study, volunteering, and greater independence in adult life.
Supporting participants to transition into the next stage of their life is a key part of the School Leavers Program. Depending on your goals, this may include Supported Employment, mainstream employment, further study, volunteering, or other capacity-building programs.
Knoxbrooke also works to build partnerships with local, trusted Inclusive Employment Australia providers and other community organisations to help participants explore suitable employment and pathway opportunities. For participants who wish to continue receiving support beyond the School Leavers age range, Knoxbrooke also offers support options for adults, providing opportunities to continue building skills, independence, community participation and meaningful pathways into adult life.
We work with you, your family, and your support network to help plan a smooth transition and identify the pathway that best supports your future goals.
Yes. Supported Employment may be an option for participants who complete the School Leaver program and are interested in pursuing employment in a supported workplace. Throughout the program, we help participants develop work skills and explore their future goals. If Supported Employment is a suitable pathway, we can assist with the transition process and help determine whether the role and support model are the right fit. If another pathway is more appropriate, we’ll work with you to explore those options as well.
Yes. If mainstream employment is one of your future goals, Knoxbrooke can support you to build the skills, experience and understanding needed to move towards that pathway. This may include developing work readiness, exploring different industries and job roles, building workplace confidence, preparing a resume, practising interviews, and gaining practical experience in workplace and community settings.
Knoxbrooke also works to build relationships with local, trusted Inclusive Employment Australia providers and other community organisations, helping participants understand and connect with appropriate employment pathways when they are ready.
